Penwortham family raises money in memory of aunt Komal

The Parehk family from Penwortham have been raising money in memory of their much loved auntie Komal who sadly passed away in 2018. Komal was a happy bubbly person and she treated all her nephews as her own. They all just felt it was right for us to do this in her memory so set up a Virgin Money page and all took part in the preston 10K run 2019.

Family member Vijay Parekh said, “we wanted to raise money in her memory and chose Headway Preston and Chorley. My nephew Hiten wanted to do something as well for Fujibaa (this is what he called her) so he raised the £120 offline donations through his school by organising a charity football match and collecting donations this way. It is special thanks to Hiten for doing what he did”. 

The Edward Gostling Foundation awards funding

The Headway Preston hospital service for patients who have sustained a brain injury has been awarded funding from the Edward Gostling Foundation. The grant will improve and enhance general welfare of patients and support them after a life changing injury.

Liz Bamber, Charity Manager said, “we have been successful in obtaining a grant from the Foundation for an extension of our neuro support for patients and their families. This means we can support more families at their time of need and help make their recovery as comfortable as possible throughout their rehabilitation journey”.

Duchy of Lancaster supports Preston Drop In’s

We are delighted that a grant from the Duchy of Lancaster’s benevolent fund will be helping us to continue our community sessions for people with a brain injury and their families. Margaret Cliffe Community Services Coordinator said, “we are so grateful for this award which is such a boost for our charity. With so many brain injury survivors accessing our community activities, we are now able to maintain this vital service for local people”.

Sapphire Ball 2019 raises over £7000

Our charity ball on 19th May 2019 has raised a staggering £7569.00 for Headway Preston and Chorley bringing in much needed unrestricted funds. Liz Bamber, Headway manager and event organiser said, ‘This is the only major fundraiser of the year that is organised by Headway Preston staff. We are delighted that the ball has raised such a large amount of money and huge thanks go to headline sponsors: Fletchers and JMW Solicitors and all who donated prizes, bought tickets and supported us on the night.

Yorkshire Building Society Foundation funds Art Project

We are delighted to announce that the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation has awarded Headway Preston and Chorley a grant to continue the art project in 2019. 

The art project has been running since 2012 and is very popular with clients at the Activity Day. It is especially beneficial to clients who may have problems expressing themselves, which is common after an acquired brain injury.

Course tutor, Laura Brown said, ‘we are very pleased that we have been awarded funding for 2019,  which will allow us to buy much needed art materials and thank the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation for their support.’

 

ABI related hospital admissions

Using hospital admissions statistics, Headway UK has compiled brain-injury-stats-2018-brainthe first dataset on all ABI-related hospital admissions in the UK. These include non-superficial head injuries, strokes, brain tumours, encephalitis, and a variety of additional conditions.

This is the first time a picture of incidence rates for all ABI in the UK has been published, with the figures highlighting a concerning growth in the number of people sustaining injuries to the brain each year.

Key findings:

There were 348,453 UK admissions to hospital with acquired brain injury in 2016-17. That is 531 admissions per 100,000 of the population.

There were approximately 954 ABI admissions per day to UK hospitals in 2016-17 – or one every 90 seconds.

Men are 1.5 times more likely than women to be admitted for head injury. However, female head injury admissions have risen 23% since 2005-6.

Headway Preston and Chorley is Mayoral Charity

Headway Preston and Chorley has been chosen as the Mayor’s charity by the newly electedTrevor Hart Mayor, Councillor Trevor Hart and his daughter, Mayoress Sarah McAlea and family friend also as Mayoress, Laura King.

We are a charity very close to the Mayor’s heart, following the loss of his wife due to a Brain Tumour. He hopes to raise the profile and provide valuable support for us during his year as Mayor.

Sarah Charnley, Chair of Headway Preston and Chorley said, ‘we are thrilled to be chosen as the Mayor’s Charity 2018/2019 and we look forward to working with him on a number of projects which will benefit the residents of Preston and will also raise awareness of the effects of brain injury’.

Sapphire Ball raises £7382.00

The annual Sapphire Ball corporate fundraiser was a huge success again this year with £7382.00 raised for Headway Preston and Chorley.

Supported by local businesses and sponsors the ball has been held for the last 3 years at Marriott Hotel Preston.

Guests of Honour included the Mayor of Preston Councillor, Trevor Hart and his Mayoress Laura King  and Headway Preston patron, Mr Graham Alexander.

Headline sponsors included JMW and Fletchers Solicitors. The event was also sponsored by Active Case Management,Glenn Slater Construction, TRU Rehabilitation, Nestor, Frenkel Topping and DMA Associates. Numerous other businesses donated prizes for the auction and raffle including Dewhurst Homes who donated an executive box at PNE.

Organiser Liz Bamber, Manager of Headway Preston and Chorley said, ‘we are very grateful to everyone who supported the Sapphire Ball this year. It is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year and keeps our front line services in operation for people with acquired brain injury and their families’.

Action for Brain Injury Week 2018

Wednesday 16th May we are also at the ABI service at Guild Lodge for their conference ‘A new me’.

The week culminates with the Headway Preston and Chorley Sapphire Ball a major corporate fundraiser for the charity.
