Hickory’s Smokehouse Cookery Workshops

Hickory’s Smokehouse in Hutton have opened their doors to Headway Central Lancashire clients by inviting them to take part in chef led cookery workshops.

The project came about after former Headway volunteer Maria Harper, who is assistant manager at the restaurant contacted Laura Brown at Headway CL, offering the opportunity.

Maria said, “I previously volunteered with Headway during my time at university- since joining Hickory’s Smokehouse in Hutton, this has been a connection I’ve been keen to rebuild. The work that Headway does has always been close to my heart and have seen first-hand the difference it makes to those affected by acquired brain injury.

This week, we hosted a brunch session where everyone enjoyed coffee, pancakes, crafts and the cinema room. It was wonderful to see everyone so engaged and excited, with a mix of familiar and new faces.

We’re launching assisted cooking and preparation sessions next week, designed to help clients build basic cooking skills, confidence with cooking and preparation and being able to take home simple recipe cards so these dishes can be replicated at home independently”.

Community is at the heart of everything we do, so this was a great opportunity for us to give something back.”

Laura said, “We would like to say a massive thank you to Hickory’s Smokehouse for providing us with this fantastic opportunity. We are a small local charity, and it is wonderful to be working with such a brilliant business with community engagement at its forefront. Quite often, after sustaining an acquired brain injury, confidence and level of skills need to be regained so we are grateful that Hickory’s are providing these cookery demonstrations. It will be great to experience what it is like to be in a professional kitchen and learn from the experts!”
