Great Run for Headway CL

On Saturday 22nd May 2022 four friends took to the streets of Manchester to raise money for Headway Central Lancashire in the Great Manchester Run Half Marathon.

Lewis Bamber, Connor Sleight, Lewis Fensome and Ryan Worthington all finished in less than 1hr 40 and made us all very proud.

Lewis Bamber said, ’17 years ago, my brother was in a motorbike accident which left him with with a serious brain injury. As a result of this, he had to pretty much restart life – learning to walk, talk and complete tasks that we otherwise wouldn’t think twice about.

This took a huge toll on our family, and although it wasn’t easy – we got through it. My mum (Liz Bamber) always puts others first, and after experiencing this, wanted to help other families going through the same. That’s where Headway Central Lancashire was born.

Headway Central Lancashire supports individuals and families who are suffering both directly and indirectly following an acquired brain injury or major trauma incident. The team works tirelessly around the clock to ensure that they have access to everything needed to get through what is an incredibly tough time.

Myself, Lewis Fensome, Ryan Worthington and Connor Sleight are completing this run to raise money for Headway Central Lancashire. To help the charity continue to provide it’s priceless services to it’s members’.

See the Hidden Me

New research shows more than three quarters of brain injury survivors struggle every day due to their hidden disability.

As part of Action for Brain Injury Week 2022 (16th – 22nd May 2022), Headway – the brain injury association is sharing the stark results of the See the Hidden Me study which found that 76% of brain injury survivors experience problems on a daily basis because of the hidden, and often misunderstood nature of brain injury.

When a brain injury occurs, in a moment of trauma or medical emergency, the life of the person affected, alongside the lives of their loved ones, are changed in an instant. The See the Hidden Me campaign focusses on raising awareness of the battle that survivors and their carers face after the injury.

Headway Central Lancashire members have taken part in the study and held focus groups to share learning, try to overcome difficulties and help each other.

Staff and volunteers at Headway Central Lancashire all have personal or family experience of brain injury and our services are uniquely tailored to our clients’ needs and family support.

Paul Wilkins: Love, Joy and Delight

Headway UK has featured Paul Wilkins in their Creative Expression feature. Creative expression | Headway

Paul struggled with epilepsy all through school. In 1983 he had an operation to control it, which was successful with regular medication assistance, but left him with cognitive disability for more than 15 years. He then went through what he describes as a ‘brain reactivation’, where he found a new ability to undertake self-rehabilitation and, with the support of organisations such as Headway Central Lancashire, began to see a big improvement in his condition. Over the years he’s become an all round creative writer.

Paul began writing poetry and thoughts in order to motivate others, and you can read his work on his website, Poetry Emotion.
