What’s the worse that can happen…..they have a clinical psychologist on the team!

Dr Amy Ashton said, ‘One optimistic day last year I mentioned to some colleagues that a very inspiring couple i know had just walked an ultra marathon called The Lap. For some crazy reason we decided it would be a good idea to sign up and raise money for an awesome charity if we managed it. So almost a year on, and we’re about to face 47miles in 24hrs… apparently with a clinical psychologist in the team nothing can go wrong… I dont think they know how unhinged I get when I’m tired/hungry/generally grumpy…

In our major trauma MDT clinic we see first hand the amazing work Headway Central Lancashire does for our patients. Their mission is to enable people, and their carers, after a major trauma to live the best life that they can. They do this in spades they are a truly inspiring team and support so many patients while they navigate the life changing effects of suffering traumatic injuries. If you want to boost our motivation and help a brilliant cause, please donate!

Liz Bamber Manager and founder member of Headway Central Lancashire said, ‘we are thrilled that Amy, Emma and Howard are doing this for our charity. They are busy every day saving lives and rehabilitating patients after a major trauma injury, but have the kindness and determination to help our small charity, and we are beyond proud and grateful’.

£170,000 grant awarded to HWCL hospital service

A total of £170,000 in National Lottery funding has been awarded to local charity Headway Central Lancashire to continue a voluntary and non-clinical support service for patients who have suffered a major trauma injury.

The money will be used to provide support on a daily basis, helping more than 2,000 patients per year for the next 4 years.

The project, called Major Trauma Patients Support Service, began in 2020 and has so far helped 6470 patients and their families going through the upheaval caused by a life-changing injury.  The service has been rated very good and excellent by the people helped.

Liz Bamber, Manager at Headway Central Lancashire, has led the charity since it began after her eldest son sustained a severe traumatic brain injury through a road traffic collision. She realised from her own family’s experience that the community was struggling to provide support to local families when they needed it the most.

Liz said: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has decided to continue supporting our work in this way. Now, thanks to National Lottery players, we will be able to continue our service to patients and help them overcome practical problems after a major trauma injury including brain injury. This funding will make a huge difference and is vital because it helps families to deal with a sudden change to their lives. The service is available to patients and their families as soon as they need it, and most issues can be dealt with before they are discharged from hospital.”

Karen Howarth Major Trauma Clinical Manager at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are thrilled that Headway Central Lancashire has received funding to expand and continue what is a fantastic source of support. The lives of the patients and their loved ones using this service have often changed dramatically and rapidly, and this daily service means there will always be help, support and advice whenever they need it. We are extremely grateful to the team and all that they do for our community.”

Headway Central Lancashire was formed in 2010 and has been supporting local adults through their voluntary hospital service and community sessions for the past 13 years.

Thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund, the Major Trauma Patient Support Service will continue offering patients help at the bedside, with welfare benefits claims, access to free legal information and support with employment issues – all of which may arise as a consequence of a sudden life-changing injury.

Mikes Race to The Stones raises £503.70

When Mike Patten’s friend suffered a brain injury in September 2021, Mike decided to do something to support the charity that helped, and in July 2022 he ran the 100km Race to the Stones, in Wiltshire.

Mike raised £503.70 for Headway Central Lancashire along with friends, John Hyde and Ruth Cornish, who were also on the race.

Mike said, “this was my biggest target of the year, and the race was pretty tough to be honest as I’ve never run that distance before (31 miles Saturday, 31 miles Sunday,) but I wanted to give something back to the charity and to say thank you”.

Laura Brown, Headway Assistant Manager said, “we are delighted to receive this donation which will support other families going through rehabilitation after a brain injury”.
